Contact: Sarah Julian Email: sarah.julian@opsrc.net Phone: 405-212-4802 ext. 105 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Yale students take learning to next level Test scores surpass expectations YALE, OK— Yale Public School students just received results from their spring NWEA MAP testing, and the scores show a level of growth of which any district would be proud. Yale students showed more progress than any school in Oklahoma during the winter, and they are on pace to show similar growth for the end of the year. District administrators attribute the students’ success to hard work from all stakeholders. Superintendent Dale Bledsoe, said, “I am proud of the effort our staff put forth to make this past year a success, but I’m equally proud of our students and their incredible achievements.” What is the NWEA MAP test? To best gauge individual students’ progress, Yale uses the Northwest Evaluation Association’s (NWEA) Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test, a nationally respected assessment that measures what students currently know. The test gauges both student achievement and growth, and based on this data, teachers can see exactly what students are ready to learn next. Students are assessed three times per year, and NWEA assigns a "projected growth" amount based on national averages of students with similar demographics and at a similar grade level. How did Yale students perform? Yale’s student achievement increased in some grades nearly 20% in reading and math: an indication that solid learning is occurring and a reason to celebrate. Performance at this level is significant because this kind of growth is not common. In each grade level, multiple classrooms show impressive growth that far exceeded NWEA's typical projections: In almost every Yale Elementary School grade, students grew more than 90% of students in schools around the nation in reading. This means that Yale students are growing at a faster rate than their peers across the U.S.. In some grades, students grew almost two years in reading in just one academic year. Sixth, 7th and 8th grade Yale Middle School students performed better in reading than 99% of schools in the nation. In each grade, students showed an average growth of 3.3 years in reading in just one school year. --more-- In math, Yale Elementary students grew more than 73% of schools in the nation on average. Kindergarten and first grades students showed more growth than over 90% of schools in the U.S.. Yale Middle School students collectively grew more than 80% of schools around the nation and grew almost 1.5 years within one school year. “We implemented continual data analysis and developed a differentiated intervention program to meet all students’ needs,” Bledsoe said. “Now we are seeing that work pay off, and these strategies will help us continue reaching for academic excellence for all our students.” ###

It is crazy to think it is a week before these kiddos graduate from 5th grade. It seems like August was just a month or two ago! They all agree that the school year has flown by! Good luck, 5th grade friends! I know that you will love Junior High! -Mrs. Endicott
